Instead of chasing every viral product or following a complicated 10-step skincare routine, the practice of lagom promotes a thoughtful, minimalist approach to beauty focused on healthy skin, multitasking products, and quality over quantity. Here’s the Swedish beauty philosophy: that's effective, eco-conscious, and easy to maintain—proving that sometimes, less really is more, by editor Trudi Brewer.

When it comes to thriving, we could all take a leaf out of Sweden's book. Renowned for its exceptional work-life balance, progressive social policies, and advanced, globally competitive, and export-driven economy. Sweden has long embraced a culture of living without excess.
It's also a global leader in sustainability, diverting nearly 99 per cent of household waste away from landfill and pioneering innovative green technologies.
That same balanced mindset is reflected in the Swedish beauty philosophy of lagom—meaning "not too much, not too little, just the right amount.”
Rather than chasing the latest trends or filling bathroom shelves with endless products, lagom encourages a considered, minimalist approach.
This means prioritising healthy skin, choosing multitasking products, and investing in quality over quantity. The result is a routine that's simpler, more sustainable, and every bit as effective as that 10-step regimen.
Here are the simple Lagom principles and products to make it happen
Skinimalism
It all starts with skin. The cornerstone of any Swedish beauty routine is healthy, deeply hydrated skin with a strong barrier. Given the harsh, cold winters the Swedes live with, the focus is always on protecting and repairing the skin barrier, which, after all, the stronger it is, the healthier your skin will be. Antioxidant-rich ingredients, such as cloudberries, sea buckthorn, and birch sap, are frequently used in Scandi skincare. The ingredients to look out for globally include vitamins C and E, hyaluronic acid, coenzyme Q10, and niacinamide, which are widely used and highly effective. As well as occlusives with moisture-sealing powers to further create a protective physical barrier that locks moisture into the skin, like plant butters, oils, and ceramides.
First Aid Beauty Pillow Pads, $80
A simple daily ritual that captures everything this brand does best: Soft and milky, these pads embody First Aid Beauty's comfort-first ethos. Thicker and almost pillow-like (hence the name), each pad is infused with First Aid Beauty's signature ingredient, soothing colloidal oatmeal, and nourishing ceramides. Extra-dry or irritated skin is instantly rejuvenated.
To use: The damp pads are designed to be pressed into the skin, allowing the milky formula to sink in, soothe and hydrate.
PREVAGE Multi-Restorative Night Cream, $280
Elizabeth Arden's iconic Prevage has been around for over 20 years and for good reason. Their next-generation night cream has been upgraded to address the needs of skin that needs rest and resilience. It works while you sleep to correct fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, dullness, uneven skin texture, and dryness. How? With the most potent antioxidant, Idebenone. A signature ingredient in Prevage, this new cream has encapsulated Idebenone technology to help deliver more effectively to the skin. Derived from coenzyme Q10, it not only improves the look and feel of your skin but also neutralises free radicals from environmental damage to which our complexions are exposed daily. An upgrade has also been made to PREVAGE Multi-Restorative Day Cream SPF 30 PA++, which now includes sunscreen and the same enhanced, encapsulated Idebenone delivery technology.
Multi-Tasking Makeup
Aside from lightening the load in your beauty bag, versatility is key when choosing makeup with multiple benefits. From lip-and-cheek tints to hydrating balms that double as foundation. This winter, there is plenty to indulge in.
Clinique Daily Calm Makeup Balm, $49
Clinique has always had a science-led approach, prioritising skin compatibility within a simple, fragrance-free, routine-based philosophy. This new skin balm marries colour with soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, sunflower seed extract, and an ingredient combination the brand calls Uniflavon, which combines Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) root extract and bamboo leaf (Phyllostachys edulis) extract. Created for sensitive, reactive, or post-procedure skin. Cucumber, magnolia bark extract, and caffeine complete the ingredient deck. It’s a silky, non-greasy, tinted formula that evens out the skintone and keeps skin calm in any weather.

Pixi On-The-Glow Blush, $38
Pixi’s clever creator, Petra Strand, says, "Try one shade on cheeks & lips to look pulled-together instantly." She’s bang on. We love the glow that these blush sticks give the skin, multitasking, flaw-fixing, and youth-enhancing; they are perfect for busy women on the go.
True to the lagom philosophy, the eight shades are loaded with skin-nourishing ingredients like antioxidant-rich ginseng and green tea, skin-soothing aloe, and fatty acid–rich castor oil. Other highlights include a handful of fruit extracts (such as grape, blueberry, and apple) and camellia oil, boosted with vitamins A, C, E, and more.
To use: Apply from the stick and blend with your fingers, it’s that easy. Pictured here: The most gorgeous pink, called Fleur.
