5 Reasons Your Makeup Is Pilling

We’ve all been there. You’re running late in the morning and rushing your skincare routine. A few serums, a generous swipe of moisturiser and a hurried layer of SPF later, you reach for your foundation. And then it happens. As you blend, tiny balls of makeup start rolling across your skin. Your carefully applied skincare — and now your makeup — is literally rolling off your face.
Welcome to makeup pilling. Once it starts, there’s frustratingly little you can do to reverse it without starting again. A better approach is to understand what’s causing it in the first place — from the products you’re layering to how you apply them and how long you let each step sink in.
Read on to learn the techniques to stop this from happening for good, by editor Trudi Brewer.

Pilling is pretty obvious when it happens, but the cause isn’t always clear. Many factors can lead to pilling, and some can worsen others, further complicating the issue. Here’s BeautyEQ's tried-and-true guide to a smooth finish, plus the latest beauty buys to help.

You’ve Got Buildup

Dead skin, leftover skincare and yesterday’s makeup can all create the perfect conditions for pilling. That residue can stop your serums and moisturiser from absorbing properly, leaving skin uneven and textured — not exactly the smooth canvas foundation needs. To fix? Start fresh. Double cleanse before makeup, especially if you’ve used rich products overnight, or invest in a balm cleanser- it will be your BFF. It’s nourishing, yet gently removes any product buildup or grime. Regular gentle exfoliation can also help keep uneven skin at bay.

NEW Tailor Balm Cleanser, $46

The texture is a dream: buttery-soft on dry skin, where it effortlessly breaks down makeup, SPF and grime. Add water, and it transforms into a silky milk that rinses away swiftly — no rubbing, no tugging and no greasy residue. The formula is powered by a ‘barrier lipid complex’, designed to replenish essential skin lipids and support moisture retention and barrier function. These include skin-loving oils like sunflower seed, jojoba seed, and sweet almond, plus CoQ10 for antioxidant support, while astragalus membranaceus root extract helps promote firmer-looking, smoother skin.
Best of all, this new balm is 98.3 per cent natural, cruelty-free, fragrance-free and made right here in New Zealand.

Your Skincare Routine Needs an Order

Giving yourself time between each skincare layer only works if you apply them in the right order: water-based products like toners, essences, or serums first, followed by oil-based eye creams and moisturisers. As a general rule of thumb, apply skincare products from lightest to thickest consistency to reduce the chance of pilling.

Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Brightening Face Primer, $119

Hands down, one of our favourite skin primers — and for good reason. The silky, skin-quenching formula does more than prep skin for makeup: it helps smooth the look of texture and fine lines while minimising the appearance of pores. The skincare-led formula brings together apple, algae, green and white tea extracts, royal jelly, aloe vera, and vitamins E and C, which add antioxidant and skin-conditioning benefits. At the same time, palmitoyl tripeptide-1 helps support a smoother-looking complexion. The payoff? Makeup glides on beautifully and lasts longer, while skin looks fresh, hydrated, smooth and naturally radiant.

Your Products Are Incompatible

If none of the above causes seems to fit, you may be using incompatible products. Layering products that don't play nicely together is one of the most common causes of pilling. After all, some ingredients don't interact well with others. Often, serums layered onto gel-type moisturisers leave a thin film on the skin that often dramatically enhances the overall texture and appearance, but may not 'play nicely with your box of cosmetics', resulting in grains of balled-up product around the eyes or on the face.

SHISEIDO Revitalessence Skin Matte Foundation, $90

Shiseido is a master at making makeup work harder, and this new foundation is a great example. This serum-like, buildable foundation combines niacinamide and fermented Kefir+, a Japanese rice ferment designed to support a healthy skin microbiome, alongside glycerin, tocopherol (vitamin E), green tea extract, allantoin and smoothing peptides. The lightweight formula blurs imperfections and the appearance of pores, while delivering a luminous (not shiny) yet matte glow that lasts for hours. For summer, when heavy foundation can feel like one layer too many, this could be the complexion upgrade you need. There are 30 inclusive colours.

Skip (Or Cut Down) On Silicones

Consider how many silicone-based skincare products are in your routine. More specifically, layering silicone on top of itself—or applying several silicone-based products prevents the skin from fully absorbing them. This causes the silicone to build up on the skin, likely leading to pilling. Check your primer's label (these often contain silicone). Silicone-based products usually list ingredients ending in -cone, -siloxane, or -methicone within the first two to three ingredients. This is how you identify if a product is silicone-based or water-based.

Urban Decay All Nighter Ghost Powder, $80

Sometimes your makeup calls for a dusting of powder. But this newbie is more than just powder. A next-gen, lightweight setting powder that uses freeze-dried technology to blur pores, smooth texture and lock makeup in place for up to 24 hours. A silicone-free formula melts into skin for a seamless, non-cakey finish that feels weightless, looks naturally perfected and won’t leave you with unwanted matte flashback. Nothing heavy. Nothing cakey. Just seriously smooth, shine-free skin.

Stick to the same Brand

Using products that complement one another is a great way to avoid pilling; makeup artists often stick to one brand or product range, like a foundation and primer or serum and moisturiser. Most often, primer and foundation products are developed to work in tandem. Also, consider product texture—lightweight formulas sit under makeup far better than thick oil-based formulas. Your prep steps should complement each other and your makeup. A water-based foundation often works best with a water-based primer, while a silicone-based foundation works best with a silicone-based primer.

MECCA MAX THIRST IMPRESSION Priming Hydrating Moisturiser, $27

A rich-but-lightweight moisturiser and primer in one. The skin hydration hit comes from four types of hyaluronic acid, while squalane helps support the skin barrier, and black Baltic moss helps the skin hold on to moisture. The payoff? Plumper-looking, dewier skin and a smoother canvas for makeup. This will be your skin’s ultimate thirst trap.
