What’s a Milky toner?
A milky toner or lotion-like liquid toner is yet another brilliant K-Beauty innovation. Applied after cleansing, it combines the refreshing feel of a toner with the comfort of a moisturiser. Unlike traditional alcohol-based toners – historically designed to remove excess oil and leave skin feeling dry and tight – milky toners focus on replenishing hydration and supporting the skin barrier, which is crucial for a healthy complexion. Compared to an essence, which is usually more gel-like in consistency to help balance the skin, help it absorb serums and moisturisers, a milky toner leans more towards mega hydration, delivering active ingredients to nourish the skin. According to Dr Sonia Khorana. 'Milky toners typically contain humectants and emollients – ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid and panthenol, alongside ceramides, fatty acids or squalane.' Great for barrier-compromised skin, they’re also a good choice for anyone using active treatments such as retinoids or acids.
Why are they So Popular?
Direct from Korea, it’s a skincare philosophy which prioritises a healthy skin barrier over harsh, quick fixes. It’s popular now because people are moving away from over-exfoliating with acids and toward gentle barrier-focused routines. It also fits into the ‘Skipcare’ movement, which simplifies your routine by combining the hydration of a toner and the nourishment of a lotion into a single step.
What are the Benefits?
Hydration and barrier repair. A milky toner was also created to calm redness, reduce sensitivity and provide skin luminosity without clogging pores. While it’s a hero for dry, dehydrated or sensitive skin, it’s also excellent for oily and combination skin types, providing essential lipids without the need for heavy traditional creams.
How Do your Incorporate Milky Toner Into Your Routine?
Milky toners are stacked with ingredients that mimic your skin’s natural lipid structure – think ceramides, squalane and glycerin – as well as soothing agents such as panthenol, centella asiatica and fermented rice water to calm sensitivity. To get the best results out of your milky toner, pat it directly onto damp skin immediately after cleansing to maximise absorption and create a plump, glowy base.

Described as “a minimalist’s dream skincare routine,” this product acts as a toner, serum, and moisturiser in one. Formulated with skin-firming fermented birch sap, olive leaf extract, mineral-rich glacier water, and a probiotic blend, designed to rebalance, hydrate, and renew skin, to keep it calm and comfortable, making it the perfect pre-makeup treatment.

Best known for its glow-giving serums and feather-light suncare, this milky toner also has a cult following. Made with rice extract, amino acids, panthenol - all-important nutrients your skin needs to thrive, it works to hydrate while also absorbing oil and minimising shine – this is particularly good for anyone with blemish-prone, combination skin.
Another award-winning K-Beauty brand, this is also another skincare multitasker. Acting as both a toner and moisturiser in one, it was made as an ultimate solution for dry, flaky skin that plumps and comforts in one simple step. Stacked with ceramides, peptides, and white tea leaf extract, it helps repair your skin barrier, calm irritation, and leave a silky, smooth, deeply moisturised complexion in its wake. This toner slips easily into any skincare routine.
Thayers is best known for its iconic Witch Hazel Toner, but this milky toner is fast becoming another go-to for anyone with dry skin. It’s an alcohol-free formula that drenches skin in hydrating glycerin and sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid). At the same time, snow mushroom extract (a.k.a. tremella fuciformis polysaccharide) helps lock in moisture for a long-lasting, dewy glow. Finally, the elderflower water soothes and softens, with a blend of glyceryl-based emollients that help remove flaky skin and greasy cleansing residue.
Another K-beauty treatment designed to soothe, hydrate, and prep so serums and moisturisers sink deeply into the skin. The ingredient list in this milky toner is impressive. A potent blend of skin-smoothing and plumping actives, including glycerin, collagen-supporting peptides, adenosine, a popular anti-wrinkle ingredient that signals cells to produce collagen, along with copper tripeptide-1 and acetyl hexapeptide-8, a peptide combination that provides deep regeneration and wrinkle reduction. Beta-glucan, a humectant that draws moisture to the skin, is used alongside plant extracts such as witch hazel, chamomile, and rice bran extract. It’s truly a do-it-all treatment to kick start your day.
