New retinol day and night cream

Vitamin A and all its derivatives, including retinol, is undoubtedly the best ingredient for brightening the skin, fighting acne, plumping fine lines, and reducing large pores. It’s also the gold standard for dermatologists and skin experts to recommend. But along with the accolades come the risks. Editor Trudi Brewer shares the potent power of Elizabeth Arden’s new retinol + HPR Ceramide Rapid Skin Renewing Water Cream.

In the world of potent skincare ingredients, science does not stand still. Case in point with Elizabeth Arden’s new retinol offering. But to better understand its unique power, let’s understand what 'retinol' is. It has become the umbrella term for several vitamin A natural derivatives, including retinol, retinal and retinoic acid. Now, the next-generation retinol is called HPR (hydroxypinacolone retinoate). Read on to learn more.

How does it work?

Combining two potent retinoids and some groundbreaking research, HPR or hydroxypinacolone retinoate is an ester of retinoic acid. A newer and more stable member of the retinoid family, it is as potent as prescribed retinoids such as tretinoin but without unwanted side effects such as redness, sensitivities, skin-flaking, or irritation. So, how does HPR work in the skin? Both at a cellular level, accelerating cell turnover, meaning fresh skin cells make their way to the skin surface. As well as deep into the skin, boosting collagen and elastin production. Arden created this formula to deliver double the skin rejuvenating power but with double the care. Releasing slowly in the skin, administering brightening and plumping benefits along with the HPR, skin-strengthening plant ceramides that help mimic the natural ceramides (the lipids or fatty acids that support the skin’s barrier function), ultimately preventing moisture loss. Firming peptides (proteins) and ginger root with irritation-minimising benefits. Combining plant extracts such as bisabolol (German chamomile extract) and ginger root offers soothing benefits. Finally, that moisture-magnet hyaluronic acid plumps and hydrates. Together, these ingredients are a tonic for the multiple signs of ageing.

Why do we like it?

First up, the texture of this cream is sublime, lightweight, and almost serum-like in the way it melts into the skin. Fast-absorbing and gentle while correcting those annoying signs of ageing. Also, good news if you have sensitive skin - the brand promises this can be comfortably tolerated. Used every other day at first, both day and night to start, it can slip into any skincare regime and eventually be used daily. Always use a daily SPF when using any retinol-based creams those fresh new skin cells I mentioned before are more vulnerable to those damaging UV rays. Of course, it can be layered with Elizabeth Arden Retinol Ceramide Capsules, which you would apply first to clean, dry skin as the serum step of your routine. Finally, the airless pump dispenses the perfect product while protecting the cream’s potency.
