Hyaluronic acid

February 18, 2022

We're converts, and most dermatologists are too. Experts swear by hyaluronic acid (HA) for how it can benefit the skin without worrying about side effects. That's because it's a sugar substance naturally produced by our bodies. It's a humectant, which means it can absorb and retain water like a sponge. In fact, HA can absorb and retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it a powerful skin hydrator for improving the appearance of wrinkles to promoting that lit-from-within glow, the one ingredient that will guarantee your skin looking healthy and refreshed. According to dermatologist Dr Charisse Dolitsky, "While our bodies produce hyaluronic acid naturally, the skin is less able to produce it as we age, making it more common for the skin to get drier over the years."

So what are the benefits of using hyaluronic acid in your skincare?

"It can affect the skin by making the cells plump up, make it dewy and more hydrated and moist, and it can minimize the appearance of fine lines," Dolinsky. "It can be especially great for people with skin prone to irritation. It also has a soothing effect on the skin if you have a sensitive skin condition." That's why you often see hyaluronic acid combined with other skincare age erasing ingredients that can be irritating, like retinol."It gives the topical preparation more of a soothing property," Dolinsky said. Although it's called an "acid," hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliator like salicylic or glycolic acid. Dolinsky believes hyaluronic acid is almost always safe and suitable for all skin types. Here’s why we - along with most dermatologists are converts to this wonder-ingredient. Check out our favourite HA products to shop or read what Harvard has to say about the hype on hyaluronic acid.
