The Hollywood Facial

As facials go, this one is exceptional. Also known as the Carbon Laser Peel or Carbon Facial. While it’s a non-invasive laser treatment, the results are epic, and it’s quick and painless. But there is science behind it: According to Brandi Turei of Laser Studio in Auckland, “The carbon facial is amazing because it deeply cleanses, tightens pores, and leaves your skin instantly smoother, brighter, and refreshed—with zero downtime. With darker skin, you can see the movement of pigmentation; with lighter skin, pores have begun to shrink.”
So, if you're battling acne, enlarged pores, oily skin, and uneven skin tone, including pigment issues, read on to learn how this Hollywood Facial can help you red-carpet ready.

How it Works

It begins like most facials. A double cleanse to remove any makeup or impurities. Then a thin layer of liquid carbon is applied to the face with a brush. This carbon is designed to penetrate deep into the pores and absorb oil, dirt, and the buildup of dead skin cells. It takes a few minutes for the carbon mask to dry, allowing it to bond to the debris on the skin's surface. Next, it’s action. The Pico laser is passed over the skin, and the light is attracted to the black carbon particles. This laser's energy hits the carbon and causes a "mini explosion" that vaporises the carbon, taking the impurities and dead skin cells with it. Yes, heat is generated by the laser, which penetrates deeper layers of the skin (beyond where an exfoliant can reach), stimulating a healing response. This action promotes the production of collagen and elastin, which are the essential cushion that firms our skin. The entire procedure is quick. It truly is a lunchtime treatment; from start to finish, it takes around 30 minutes and is almost painless, albeit with a light warming sensation or slight prickling on the skin from the laser.

So to the Benefits

With a title like the Hollywood Facial, it instantly draws attention. It’s also quirky and very Insta-worthy, with the black carbon mask and smoking light energy of the laser. But it still has to deliver. So what does it deliver up? This facial effectively cleanses pores, reducing the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads. It’s a great way to deeply exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells and leaving the skin smoother and brighter. For anyone battling adult acne, this is worth a shot. The heat from the laser can destroy acne-causing bacteria and shrink sebaceous (oil) glands, which helps to reduce oil production and prevent future breakouts. I have high hopes for pore reduction; tightening enlarged pores is on my wish list. A general improvement in skin texture is a bonus, as mentioned; this treatment promises to boost collagen and elastin production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture and firmness. Finally, who doesn’t want a more even skin tone, including help to fade sun spots and acne scars?

The carbon facial is amazing because it deeply cleanses, tightens pores, and leaves your skin instantly smoother, brighter, and refreshed—with zero downtime. With darker skin you can see pigmentation movement, with light skin pores have started to shrink.

Side Effects and Downtime

A major advantage of the carbon facial is that it is a non-invasive procedure with minimal downtime. You can typically return to work or resume your daily routine immediately after the treatment. However, like all skin treatments, there are always some temporary side effects, which may include mild redness, tingling, or a warm sensation, temporary dryness or flaking, and increased skin sensitivity. In rare cases, more serious side effects like burns or scarring can occur due to improper laser settings. It's important to have the procedure performed by a trained and licensed laser professional. Following post-treatment care instructions, such as using sunscreen and gentle skincare products, is also crucial for optimal results.

STYLE DIRECTOR LOUISE HILSZ experiences The Hollywood Facial at Auckland’s Laser Studio

I have two main skin concerns—rosacea and large pores—so when I heard about this treatment, I couldn’t wait to try it. What I love most is how quick and convenient it is—I was in and out in just 30 minutes. On the pain scale, I’d rate it about a 2 out of 10. It feels like a tiny rubber band flicks against the skin. The upper lip area was a little more sensitive, as it usually is, but still very manageable.

One tip: if you’re prone to cold sores like me, definitely take antivirals beforehand. I usually do with any injectable or laser treatment, but skipped this time and ended up with a very mild one under my nose. Luckily, I caught it early, so it didn’t flare up into anything significant.

For most people, carbon facials are recommended as a course of multiple treatments rather than just one session, since results build over time. General skin refresh, 1–2 treatments can give an immediate brighter, smoother look. Acne, enlarged pores, or oily skin, usually 4–6 treatments, spaced about 2–3 weeks apart. Pigmentation, fine lines, uneven texture, often 4–8 treatments, depending on the concern and skin response. Maintenance, once the initial course is done, many people have a top-up every 1–3 months to keep the skin clear and glowing. Priced from $149 a session you can book in at Laser Studio in Auckland

The Hollywood Facial costs: $140, allow 30 minutes.
