What inspired you to open Valet Nails in Ponsonby?

Meet Jamsine Malatios co owner of Valet

Valet came from a feeling that something was missing. I had experienced incredible nail spaces overseas and realised Auckland didn’t quite have that same level of experience. We wanted to create a space that felt elevated, but still welcoming. Somewhere you look forward to spending time in.

What gap did you see in the Auckland nail/beauty space?

There was a gap between fast, functional nail bars and high-end beauty spaces. We saw an opportunity to bring those two worlds together. Exceptional nail care, strong hygiene standards, and considered design, all in one place.

You’re fully licensed—why was that important to you from day one?

I always wanted Valet to feel a bit more elevated than your standard nail appointment. Being fully licensed means you can sit back with a drink and actually enjoy the experience. It’s those little touches that make it feel different.

What sets your approach to nail care apart from a typical salon?

We focus on the full experience, not just the result. It’s about healthy nails, attention to detail, and creating an environment that feels calm and elevated. You’re not rushed in and out; it’s considered, from start to finish.

How do you balance trend-driven designs with nail health?

We love design, but never at the expense of nail health. Our approach is always about working with the natural nail, using quality products, and guiding clients toward choices that look great while also supporting the nail's long-term integrity.

What nail trends are you loving (or quietly retiring)?

We’re loving softer, more tonal looks. Sheer finishes, chocolate tones, elevated neutrals. Things that feel timeless but still current. We’re seeing fewer overly heavy, bulky sets. People are leaning towards more refined, natural finishes. Lots of polka dots!

Are Auckland clients more classic or experimental?

A bit of both. Auckland clients are quite style-aware. They appreciate a clean, classic base but aren’t afraid to try something new when it feels wearable.

What makes a good nail tech?

Attention to detail, consistency, and genuinely caring about the health of your client’s nails. It’s also about reading and understanding what they want, even when they’re not quite sure how to explain it.

What’s the most requested colour, shape & length?

We see a lot of soft neutrals, milky pinks, sheer nudes, and deep browns. Shape-wise, short to medium almond or soft square is the most requested. Length is definitely leaning more natural and wearable.

What should you expect from every nail service?

Consistency, hygiene, and a high level of care. From the way tools are handled to the final result, every detail should feel considered.

How has social media shaped what clients ask for?

Massively. Clients come in with references, which we love. It opens up the conversation. But it’s also our role to translate those ideas into something that works for their nails and lifestyle.

Aside from nails, what other treatments do you offer?

It is important to us to do what we do exceptionally well. We offer a full manicure and pedicure menu, from express services right through to premium treatments. Everything from your most basic manicure to highly complex, detailed nail art, always with a strong focus on nail health and care. We also offer appearance medicine through our cosmetic nurse.

What have been the biggest challenges in building the brand?

Balancing growth while maintaining the standard we set from day one. As demand increases, the experience must never slip. That’s something we are very intentional about.

What’s next for Valet Nails - expansion, new services, collaborations?

We’re excited about thoughtful growth. Whether that’s collaborations, events, or expanding the Valet experience in a way that still feels true to the brand. We do have some exciting projects in the pipeline, so watch this space.

What’s your personal go-to nail style?

Something clean and minimal. A sheer neutral or soft pink. Effortless, but polished.

Best piece of business advice you’ve received?

Protect the standard. Growth means nothing if the quality drops.

What does success look like to you right now?

A full salon, happy clients, and a space that people genuinely enjoy coming back to. If people leave feeling better than when they arrived, we’re doing what we set out to do.
