Ballet flats: yay or nay?

I love wearing flat shoes; rarely do I wear a heel. If you feel the same way, you might be excited that ballet flats are back in vogue. Prada’s Fall/Winter 2023 show was riddled with them, and now they seem to be trickling down the fashion scene from luxury to affordable mass brands. Mui Mui has a dedicated shoe section to them, which is not surprising as they seem to be the most popular choice for fashionable women online. Am I a fan? No. It’s quite possibly my most disliked shoe style. I find them uncomfortable and very unflattering (unless you have a long, lean leg), and don’t get me started when people wear old, worn-looking ones that need to be re-soled. But in the interest of good fashion-manship, (new word) I’ve rounded up who’s wearing what and where to buy this fashion trend.

Miu Miu Satin Ballerinas, AU$1390

This is the most popular ballet flat, as seen on Insta-famous babes like Maxine Wylde. First released in 2016, Miu Miu's iconic ribbon flats kicked off a love affair with ballet flats that hasn't slowed down since. They come in a range of colours and are also available in a leather option.

Aquazzura leather ballerina shoes, US$991

These ballerina shoes from Aquazzura are classy and detailed, with a patent toecap and a delicate tonal bow, catering to the brand's refined aesthetic. A low metallic heel completes the look.

Mi Piaci Islington Ballet Flat, $260

Shop local for an easy everyday look. With a refined profile and sleek design, the Islington flat embodies chic yet simple styling. Pair with denim and a blazer for an off-duty look, perfect for all low-key occasions.

Tom Ford Padlock metallic ballet flats, US$1421

Leave it to Tom to sex up this lack-lustre trend. The slender wrap silhouette of Tom Ford's ballet flats creates a barely-there shape. Made in Italy from metallic silver leather (the only bonus), this pair is finished with the brand's signature padlock as a nod to this luxury brand.

Prada Soft padded nappa leather ballerinas, US$950

It would probably be these if I were forced to wear a pair of ballet flats. They look like little moon shoes. I love the padded trend in accessories now; this appeals to me, and they are pink.

Wittner Agnes Champagne Metallic Leather Ballet Flat, AU$160

The Agnes ballet flat is an affordable option, wrapped in metallic leather, with a closed-toe and bow details on the upper - luxe on a budget.

Maison Margiela Tabi broken mirror ballerina, AU$1275

The Tabi ballerina flat shoe in the broken mirror finish features the Maison's iconic Tabi split-toe shape. Tabi styles are inspired by the traditional 15th-century Japanese sock bearing the same name. It captures the avant-garde and insubordinate spirit of that time. It is a heritage classic; wearing this, you will stand out in the crowd.

Tory Burch Minnie leather ballerina shoes, US$515

Tory Burch! The mistress of the mall, the maven of the mass market! Suddenly, as her eponymously named brand celebrates its 20th anniversary, it's been re-birthed as the hot new thing. Perhaps these may replace the popularity of the Miu Miu flat.

See by Chloé Chany buckle-detail ballerina shoes, $484

And finally, it’s as classic as it comes: a Chloe ballet flat. A pop of red is being dubbed as the biggest trend this season. Instagram account whatpeoplearewearing spotted Sofia Ritchie Grainge in New York wearing red ballet flats with a gorgeous black and white dress. This Instagram account of over 439k followers has been seeing SO much red in general it’s officially the colour of the season she says.

So, after researching what’s out there, have I changed my mind on ballet flats? No. In my opinion, it’s a weak shoe and should stay in the dance studio. But there is a look for everyone, so if you like it, I encourage you to embrace it. Happy shopping.
