Fashion is so dull right now. We’re scrambling to share new trends or at least a new colour palette that excites us. It’s slim pickings. One bright spark is the return of the brooch - welcome news for accessory lovers like us. Editor Trudi Brewer shares a thrifty trend to update what is already in your wardrobe.
Once a nostalgic relic, this vintage accessory has returned, renewed with modern relevance.
Brooches may be a look you've written off as outdated and old-fashioned, something your Nana would wear with pride. But today, brooches (wearing more than one) are doing the heavy lifting, bringing new life to the wardrobe you already own.
Making an appearance on runways, Chanel, Tory Burch and Armani reintroduced this chic accessory to elevate sharp tailoring, floaty dresses and cosy knitwear, offering a look of purposeful sophistication.
Frankly, I am obsessed. Even if this is a fleeting micro-trend, it’s a cost-effective way to restyle your everyday looks and to dust off the brooches that may have been lying dormant in your jewellery box for years. I, for one, have hoarded my collection for decades, hoping they would one day be on trend again, and now it’s thier time to shine.
How to wear brooches in 2026
The Canadian tuxedo, or denim-on-denim, is already a style statement. Add a multitude of brooches stacked across the jacket, and you've got a regal take on this trend. A dark-wash denim works best for this, serving as a contrasting canvas for the glittery collection.
On a denim jacket or crisp white shirt, pin a brooch at the collar for an easy statement. Unlike a necklace that moves as you walk, this brooch stays steady and looks endlessly chic.
Brooches don’t have to be worn only on jacket lapels or pinned to shirts. Why not pin one to your tie or handbag? The necktie trend was one of 2025's top styles, thanks to the rise of power suiting. Adding a brooch is one way to break out of the school-meets-business style and add a maximalist spin.
Miu Miu and Prada lean into ladylike style, add a decadent brooch to a top-and-maxi skirt combo, pair with peep-toe heels, and it finishes this timeless look.
