Think back a few years, and the hand sanitiser we had on rotation was beyond basic. Sure, it had a purpose, but with that came a nasty medicinal scent, and ultra-drying ingredients that left your skin feeling parched and sticky. Not today. We are finally living in an age where that necessary is now a luxury experience, and rightly so. Editor Trudi Brewer shares the most luxurious hand sanitisers.

You may have never thought of sanitiser outside of its functionality. But today, designer fragrance companies and trusted brands are loading what was once a hard-working essential with mood-boosting essential oils to exceed our expectations. Sanitisers have evolved to provide an indulgent, non-drying formula that prioritises safety while keeping your skin happy. Here’s a welcome upgrade from health to beauty with hand cleansers that are punching above their weight. Yes, some are pricy, but there are also a few affordable gems that deserve to be the best in what is a stand-alone beauty category.
BYREDO Suede Rinse-free Hand Cleanser 450ml, $95
Famous for its captivating fragrances, this rinse-free sanitiser delivers instant freshness as well as a 59 per cent alcohol formulation to kill germs. The luxe-y velvet matte opaque bottle is befitting of the heavenly scents inside, namely: Bergamot, lily of the valley, violet, crisp amber, musks, plum and fresh aldehydes.
AĒsop Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash, 500ml $73
It’s as luxurious as they get and a great alternative to the omnipresent Detol. Dressed in Aesop’s signature packaging, the oils (mandarin orange, cedarwood, and rosemary), to name a few, are subtle but do disguise that alcoholic bouquet, reminiscent of a doctor's surgery. This is the perfect rinse-free sanitiser to have near the front door for a busy family and guests. There is also a Geranium Leaf Rinse-Free Hand Wash, 50ml, travel-friendly size for $19.
DIPTYQUE Rinse Free Hand Wash 45mL, $53
This is one hand sanitiser you will not want to share. A blend of sambac jasmine, peach and pink peppercorn scent, whipped with sweet almond oil that leaves hands feeling silky and clean. Its purifying benefits are from white saponaria, or soapwort cleanser. While it doesn’t claim to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, bacteria or viruses, for a swift hand clean, on the go, it’s brilliant.
Davore Moisturising Hand Sanitiser,300ml $25
A loved hair brand that also makes an epic, kind on the hands, rinse-free sanitiser. It’s fresh, crisp floral scent works swiftly to clean hands without leaving them feeling parched. It’s also free from nasties like Parabens and sulphates. We also love the compact 300ml bottle.
Dr Bronner's Lavender Hand Sanitizer,$16
We love this classic American soap company, which has been producing natural soaps for nearly 70 years, and the scent of this sanitiser takes us back in time to our nan's linen cupboard, thanks to its almost garden-like lavender scent. Yes, it kills germs with a simple back-to-nature formula: organic ethyl alcohol, water, organic lavender oil, and organic glycerin—that’s it. No nasty chemicals and perfect for kids’ faces and hands, or to keep in your handbag. It also doubles as an air freshener or deodorant.
A sleep hack that promotes wellness.
