Oil works so well as a cleanser because it attracts oil - it's simple. Add the friction from your hands, massaging the oil into the skin, and makeup, grime, and the day's pollutants won't stand a chance. But here is the kicker, oil-based cleansers keep your skin balanced and nourished as well as ultra-clean. Read on to learn more about this fab NZ-made oil cleanser.

Tailor Oil Cleanse, $39.

How to use a cleansing oil

Use two pumps of oil and warm it in the palms of your hands first. Always start with dry hands and apply oil to a dry face for that authentic cleansing oil experience; this helps spread the oil and loosens the makeup from the skin. Next, massage the cleansing oil in an upward circular motion for a few minutes to give the skin a deep clean, and then use a warm damp Tailor Towel, $19 or a face cloth to remove.

What’s in it?

A blend of 100 per cent cold-pressed pure plant oils, including New Zealand hazelnut and kanuka oils, that help remove impurities from the skin. Organic sunflower oil and vitamin E are ideal for sensitive, easily irritated skin. Organic coconut oil base makes the best makeup remover, leaving no trace of makeup, even mascara, on the skin. Finally, rosemary oil helps boost lymphatic drainage and helps to rid the skin of toxins; it’s also responsible for the subtle herbal-like scent.

Why do I like it?

Once upon a time, ‘oil’ was a dirty word in the skincare universe. Not anymore, thanks to the K-beauty trend, particularly when it comes to cleansing. While oil and water repel one another, oils are like magnets, attracting each other, which means using a cleansing oil helps cut through oils in makeup, and sunscreen, dissolving them fast. Unlike their water-based soapy counterparts, there’s also no risk of stripping or over-drying your skin, especially for those with dry or sensitive and, yes, even acne-prone. So back to why we like Tailor Oil Cleanse, it earns big points for a short, natural ingredient list loaded with plant-based goodies; the more antioxidants we can get into our skincare routine, the better. In addition, it dissolves stubborn waterproof makeup fast, converting even oil cleansing beginners into believers. All you need to do is cleanse, rinse, and glow.

Oils add a barrier of protection to the skin as well as superficial hydration. Your skin soaks up water, but this evaporates quickly. Oils cleanse brilliantly and leave a fine layer of moisture on the skin that continues to nourish for hours, which is brilliant in the heat.
