Anyone can have healthy skin, when you understand what it needs. But did you know your skin's pH level (the measure of how acidic or alkaline something is) is crucial to its health, appearance and performance as your body's protective layer? In winter, temperature changes can be very dehydrating and damaging to our complexion. Switching to pH-balancing skincare products when your skin feels tight and dry can help to keep it looking its best. Here are few fun facts to help you take the litmus test:

FACT

Your pH levels vary throughout your body, from your blood (a slightly alkaline pH 7.35) to your stomach (a very acidic pH 3.5). Ideally, your skin's pH should be a slightly acidic 5.5. This is because the outer layer of your skin is its protective barrier to keep harmful bacteria, pollution and UV rays out but moisture and lipids in. In beauty speak, this layer of skin is often referred to as the 'acid mantle' and it needs your natural oil production and sweat to keep it in its pH sweet spot.

FACT

According to a 2010 study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, women with more alkaline skin (a pH of more than 7) developed fine lines and crow's feet faster than those with a slightly acidic pH level. They were also prone to sunburn and damage faster than those with acidic skin.

FACT

Everything you put on your skin will affect its pH level. Using traditional soap has an immediate impact – and not in a good way. The pH level of most soap lies between 9 and 10 (very alkaline) and that's why your skin feels tight and dry after washing with soap.

FACT

When the skin's pH is not sitting around the 5.5 mark it can appear red, look inflamed and be sensitive to touch. The good news is that balancing your skin's pH can be as simple as a few tweaks to your diet and beauty routine – and it doesn't have to break the bank.
