2023 interior trends

Your interior dècor is an expression of your personality, and to help guide you, style director Louise Hilsz shares the trends to look for if you consider updating your home this year. From fresh paint ideas to cheerful decor style - as far as 2023 goes, the future looks bright.

Dopamine dressing

Dopamine dressing is part of the broader 'comfortcore' trend, focused on joyful decorating and design frivolity as a form of escapism. Designed to boost your living spaces with bold colours, look-at-me art, dreamlike wallpapers and mood-lifting colour accents. I love this trend, and it’s happening in my home room by room. I’m obsessed with getting my puzzles framed; I’ve completed my fifth, it’s at the picture framer as we speak, The World of Yayoi Kusama: A Jigsaw Puzzle, which certainly speaks to that look-at-me art vibe.

Spathrooms

There is nothing quite as luxurious as a spa-style bathroom (or, as the experts say spathroom). Designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. Think of calming colours, natural materials, pearl tiling and minimalistic décor. The “home spa” is becoming a focus in modern bathroom renovation styles. It incorporates elements of indulgent spa retreats into your bathroom with added practicality for everyday use.

60’s & 70’s revival

Expect to see more 60’s and 70’s influence in interior design. Recent movies like Elvis, with set and costume designer Australian Catherine Martin, created an extravagant display of this era's best interior and fashion styles. Actor Harry Styles's appearance in Don’t Worry Darling showcases an array of perfectly manicured Palm Springs-style people. Think pops of colour on front doors and wild use of fabric for those who are more adventurous with dreamy, velvet sunken furniture. You can tap reflect this trend with warm brown, gold and red shades. As well as tones of clay, honey or paprika as the base for your interior, layer with fun colours and shapes to add unique interest.

Painted Borders

Painted borders are inexpensive to play with a room's structure and perspective while adding opportunities for exciting colour combinations. It covers a wide range of painted techniques like colour blocking and stencilling and can highlight interesting alcoves, high ceilings, cornicing or disguise unsightly features like heat pumps. I’m obsessed with this trend and am eager to start painting my home to reflect this style.

IRREGULAR rugs

Irregularly shaped rugs in striking designs will draw your eye to the floor. Not only do these living room rugs come in interesting print, but they also sport unconventional shapes. From curvy, to geometric, or angular, these top rugs offer out-of-the-box style, that we are ready to embrace it.
