Bedroom décor: Cosy up this winter

Winter is the season to create a cosy bedroom sanctuary. Style director Louise Hilsz shares how to layer warmth with quilts and duvets, soft lighting, plush rugs, and warm textiles to insulate the entire room. The colour palette should reflect a positive and nurturing vibe, too. Hilsz is excited by bolder trends but believes it’s the most personal space in your entire home, so you want it to reflect you most closely. after all most of us will spend at least 2000 hours every year sleeping.
While warm colours always work well in bedrooms, earthy green, pops of pink, and moody blue with zesty mustard are making a comeback. Colour combinations liven up your home and can add personality to any interior project. Neutrals run from buttery to blush and are stunning with a moody grey backdrop. Hilsz says to consider the 60-30-10 rule with your paint choices to make your bedroom inviting and snug. By giving walls, ceilings, and side tables a fresh coat of colour, you can transform the room for the chilly season ahead. Finally, fill your bedroom with scent; lavender, vanilla, cinnamon, and clove are the ideal aromas to surround yourself with this winter.

Pink and green

Layering different textures enhances the comfort of the room. The combination of these two colours also has an uplifting effect on your mood. Green is the colour of life, vitality, and growth; pink, on the other hand, is the colour of love and harmony and is often used as a neutral tone in dècor style. Popular as soft velvets or delicate floral wallpapers, these versatile hues come in plush velvet blankets, knitted pillows, and textured rugs that instantly add depth and cosiness.

Charcoal neutrals

Grey-based neutrals are popular in winter. Enduring and timeless, they can be bold or subtle as well as soothing and pair beautifully with fresher, more vibrant colours, creating a sense of balance and harmony in any room. If you are not keen on dark walls, you can layer various textures in charcoal hues, such as a plush grey duvet cover, velvet pillows, and a sleek wool rug to create visual interest and add depth to your bedroom design. Add a touch of glamour to this moody hue by incorporating metallic accents like silver or gold with light fittings, picture frames, or ornaments.

Blue & Mustard

When incorporating blue and mustard tones in your bedroom decor, the key is to balance the richness of both colours for a harmonious look. Incorporate mustard accents with throw pillows, curtains, or a statement piece of furniture like a headboard to add warmth and a pop of colour. Opt for a blue duvet cover or quilt to anchor the room, and layer it with mustard and white pillows to create interest. Remember to experiment with different textures and patterns to add depth and personality to the room while maintaining a cohesive colour scheme. Decorative items like vases, artwork, or a rug in varying shades of blue and mustard can enhance the overall look and feel of the space.

pink, navy, and green

One of our favourite colour combinations, pink, navy, and green, is ideal for any bedroom. Decide which colour you want to dominate using the 60-30-10 rule. The dominant colour should be 60 per cent of one colour you choose. Then, 30 per cent for the secondary shade and 10 per cent for the accent colour. The primary colour will serve as the backdrop for the room, and then the other two shades will be used as accent colours throughout the room. For example, incorporate navy curtains, pink throw pillows, and green decorative accents to tie everything together. Add depth and visual interest to the room by combining different textures and patterns in the three colours with stripes, florals, or geometric patterns to add interest to the finished look. Aim for a balanced distribution of the colours to avoid overwhelming the space.

Plum tones

Plum is warm and vibrant and sits somewhere between purple and magenta. It's also a regal colour that has become a classic and harmonises any decor scheme. Consider painting one accent wall in a deep plum shade to make a bold statement without overwhelming the space. If you prefer a more subtle approach, opt for plum-coloured wallpaper with a delicate pattern that works well. Then, introduce plum tones through your bedding to add pops of colour to the room you can quickly refresh each season. Bring in some greenery to contrast the plum tones, adding freshness to the room. Consider potted plants or a vase of fresh flowers to liven up the space when creating a calming room cocooned in plum.
