Winter decor trends

The easiest way to elevate your home is with dramatic touches of luxury, a new plant or perhaps a splash of paint. Aim for sumptuous objects and soft furnishings that redefine the home with all the comforts and refinements of a boutique hotel. Style director Louise Hilsz shares the best from a trends we adore.

A touch of Luxe

There has been a glamorous revival when it comes to interior style. Kickstarted by Pantone when they declared the classic blue was the colour of the year last year 2020. That trend saw the return of art deco style and Viennese Modernism, then spending more time at home elegant geometric shapes, luxury velvets, monochrome prints, and cashmere throws were in hot demand.

Statement headboard

With the rise of the boutique hotel look, trending in interior design is the ornate headboard. A brillant focal point in any bedroom decor. We like these brave examples of colour and pattern for inspiration, then have fun coordinating your headboard with wallpaper or throw. Don’t be afraid to choose a more outlandish style as this only adds more character - see it as art above your bed.

Ocean Hues

Capturing the dream of relaxing poolside or jetting off to a tropical beach getaway, the shades of aqua and inky blues offer a calm, contemporary look. Benjamin Moore's Color of the Year 2021 reflects this shift. Tranquil, yet modern interiors with Aegean Teal (below), a colour that is known for its association with peace, calm and comfort.

Maximalism

“Go loud with colour, texture and pattern,” says Louise Hilsz. A trend that Hilsz embodies with every inch of her style, from her wardrobe to home. Her top tip is, “You must use a minimum of five colours in clashing hues.”

Houseplants

Turn your home into an urban jungle. Our editor Trudi Brewer is in love with floral in her home. From fresh flowers and living herbs in her kitchen to a plethora of subtropical greenery. Her top tip is, “Make sure you feed your plants regularly, and repot every six months fresh soil makes a huge difference to the growth.”

Warm-up with colour

This winter provides the perfect excuse to get cosy, and a great way of doing this is by incorporating warm, comforting colours into your home. Shades to covet for winter include burnt, sunset orange and peacock blues, preferably together in one room.
