The four fab hairstyles that will dominate 2021

Nothing feels as good as a fresh haircut. Especially given the constant bouncing in and out of lockdowns with salons closed. From a new look to an invigorating trim, Danny Pato from D&M hair design 2021 International Hairdresser of the Year. says you can expect a range of stunning cuts for every hair length and texture this year. Here are the four styles inspiring us right now, says editor Trudi Brewer.

The Shag

As a result of quarantine, we were all sporting a little extra length, hence the emergence of the messy shag, or modern mullet. Think sexy movement and texture created by lots of layering, which suits most hair types. We’re calling this the cut for 2021, and what makes it so modern is the addition of a fringe. When it comes to the best hair to suit this shape, Danny Pato says: “This style suits hair with a natural wave best, which gives this look great body.” To style, “Prep damp hair with a Davines Sea Salt Spray, twist sections of hair in different directions, dry with a diffuser (or air dry naturally) then shake out the wave and to achieve that tousles look,” says Pato. Finally, once the hair is dry, spritz in a texturising hair spray gives hair body and movement.

The Curtain Fringe

Our beloved curtain fringe is going nowhere - thankfully. In hot demand throughout 2021, Pato says it’s ideal if you want a change but not ready for a drastic chop. When it comes to styling, Pato says, “Prep damp fringe with a Davines Blow Dry Primer to prevent frizz. Part in the centre, then blow dry using a YS Park Round Hairbrush to roll forward and under; once the hair is 100 per cent dry, create the curtain flick by wrapping the hair backwards around the brush, blow drying, then waiting until the hair and brush have cooled down.”

Long & Strong

Long hair has always been on-trend, but if you are considering letting your hair grow, you need to focus on its health. While it’s low maintenance in styling, it will only look full and luscious with regular blunt trims and some TLC. Pato says,Combing long damp hair causes damage. Instead, after applying conditioner and rinse it out, use a detangling brush such as Tangle Teezer Wet Detangler brush or a wide-tooth comb in the shower to comb Davines NOUNOU Conditioner from the ends to the roots of the hair. This helps seal moisture into the cuticle (preventing frizz) and detangles your hair with no risk of damage.
Another tip is to invest in a silk or satin pillowcase if you have long (or damaged) hair.

Big Curl

Embracing your natural texture and steering clear of chemical relaxers and the need for constant hot tool styling has seen a new trend emerge "naturalistas". Translated, it's embracing your natural curl. From the cut to the colour and how you style curly hair. Pato says, “Curly hair needs a lot of moisture. Always use a dedicated Davines Curl Shampoo and Davines Curl Hair Mask. After washing your hair, wrap the hair in an old cotton T-shirt rather than a towel to absorb excess water. Don’t towel dry by rubbing your hair this will only encourage frizz by ruffling the hairs cuticle. While hair is still damp, liberally apply a Davines Curl Primer to even out porosity, protect and define the look of each curl.”
