To get into the habit of wearing sunscreen every day, you need to find a formula you love. Remember even if you are indoors UV exposure can occur from ultraviolet that penetrates through the glass, which is UVA - those ageing rays. Also, UVA rays are emitted at the same level all day long, unlike UVB rays, which is blocked by glass and peaks around mid-day.

Here’s what to consider when shopping for sunscreen.

What is the difference between mineral and chemical ingredients in sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, avobenzone), work like a sponge, absorbing UV rays, while mineral or physical sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) reflect light off the skin. Most dermatologists suggest playing it safe with a sunscreen that contains a mix of both mineral and chemical screens.

Avène Sunscreen Emulsion SPF 50+, $35.

Broad-spectrum, which means it protects your skin from UVA (ageing rays) and UVB (burning rays) and is photostable (won’t degrade in the sun), and perfect for sensitive skin. The patented 'SunSitive' protection, means fewer chemical filters to prevent breakouts and skin flareups. And like all Avène skincare, it contains a base of the thermal spring water. The vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, works as a backup to your SPF to help prevent free radicals from damaging your skin. It’s water-resistant for up to 40 minutes, paraben-free and non-greasy, and has a citrus floral scent.

What does each SPF factor number mean?

From 15 to 30, and 50, these numbers are the 'sun protection factor' that measures the time your skin is protected under the sun. High summer in New Zealand, if the burn time is two minutes, between 11, am and 2 pm, then the protection of an SPF 50 x two which is 100 minutes before you will burn. However, this SPF factor relies on you applying about 30ml of lotion with each application.

Should you reapply sunscreen throughout the day? If so, when – and how much?

Under the sun and swimming, you need to apply sunscreen every two hours, especially between 11-3. Dermatologists suggest a teaspoon amount for the face and a 30ml shot glass for the entire body. Another rule make sure you apply your sunscreen 20 minutes before you hit the beach.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Wet Skin SPF50+, $43.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen with wet skin technology, which means you apply this lotion directly after swimming and the hydrophilic formula will repel water, and all the sunscreen to spread evenly over your skin. The formula is stacked with antioxidants, and glycerin, to nourish the skin while it protects.

Should you apply sunscreen before or after moisturiser?

Sunscreen should be the last step in your skincare routine, just before you apply your makeup.
