How to correct and conceal dark circles

When I am tired, the skin around my eyes is the first to show the signs of fatigue. Editor Trudi Brewer asks Bobbi Brown trainer Olivia Wildey how to correct, and perfect the delicate eye area.

I am not a great sleeper. Most nights I wake around three, toss and turn, and then start my to-do list in my head. After a few nights of this, the telltale signs of fatigue are under my eyes for the world to see. Dark circles, redness and those fine lines seem to look more exaggerated by the end of the week. Until I discovered the joy of a skin corrector. According to Bobbi Brown training manager Olivia Wildey at Auckland's Britomart adding a skin corrector to your makeup routine is a wakeup call for tired-looking eyes. "It helps eliminate dark circles and smooth fine lines, without skin looking loaded with makeup, which can accentuate ageing," says Wildey.
Who recommends always prepping skin with an eye cream before applying corrector and choose a peach-based shade, which instantly neutralises darkness. This coupled with a concealer (the exact colour match to my skin tone) blended together and boom - the darkness is gone. Not only is this a brilliant concealer hack, layering a hydrating eye cream, with the combination of these two products that are sweat and humidity-resistant, and ultra creamy, it's so easy to blend.
Wildey says "The eye cream is the base to correct dryness, then the corrector and concealer melt together into your skin to eliminate imperfections and smooth any discolouration." Her advice: "Wait a few minutes, before applying a little powder to make this combination crease-free for hours."

Step 1
Apply a lightweight eye cream underneath the eyes; avoid the eyelids if you plan on wearing eye makeup. The cream should absorb quickly and leave your skin feeling smooth, not wet.
Step 2
To neutralise discolouration and darkness, start with a corrector. Apply with a concealer brush taking the product up to the lash line focusing on the inner corner of the eye. Finally, gently pat and press product under the eye with your finger to blend- be careful not to wipe it away by over-blending.
Step 3
Layer concealer directly over the corrector (using the same brush) to lighten darkness and create a seamless transition between the under eye area and the rest of the face. Gently blend with your fingers in a soft, patting motion.
Step 4
Lock the corrector and concealer in place and prevent it from creasing by lightly dusting setting powder with a small touch-up brush under the eyes.
