Beautiful colour work and fuss-free styling are Aboki Hair's calling card. An institution in Nelson, the salon has been in business for 28 years with co-owner Melissa van Gosliga at the helm. It's also an inclusive salon regarding age, with a range of stylists from 20 to late 50s. Some have been in the business for 30 years. We asked van Gosliga to share her favourite trends and tips on caring for your hair at home.

What is on-trend with cuts and colours for this summer?

2023 has a refreshed feel when it comes to hair. More layers, softer cropped fringes, and the curtain bang reflect those '70s and 90s looks. That lovely movement is made easy with internal layers – perfect for giving effortless style to your hair.

How can we prevent getting sun-damaged hair?

Make sure your hair is protected from those damaging UV rays, as you do with your SPF in your skincare. The most obvious but easily overlooked is wearing a hat. This acts as a protective shield for not only your hair but also your scalp. Also, chlorinated water in swimming pools can make hair more vulnerable and porous, so always rinse your hair after swimming.

Schwarzkopf Professional BC Clean Performance Repair Rescue Treatment, $31.

A deep conditioning treatment with Arginine, the key ingredient, is stacked with amino acids (proteins) and Shea butter to rebuild and revitalise compromised colour-treated and dry hair.

To use: Apply to towel-dried hair and comb it through it; for an intense mask, leave it on for up to ten minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

What about scalp care? How vital is scalp care?

Use gentle hair care and avoid products that contain sulfates, alcohols, or fragrances that compromise scalp health. Shampoo hair gently and wash it less often. If you think your scalp may need extra love, chat with your stylist next time you're at the salon. I recommend the Schwarzkopf Professional range of Scalp Clinix; it’s brilliant.

Summer is the perfect time to forgo heat styling and embrace your hair’s natural texture. Any tips?

Naturally, when you reduce the amount of hot tool styling, it's healing for your hair; however, in summer, we also are exposed to harsh UV rays and drying salty sea air. By using hydrating home haircare, you are going to reduce further damage. The Schwarzkopf Professional BC Clean Anti-Frizz range is ideal for detangling and softening unruly and frizzy hair. As such, it provides all hair types with up to 72 hours of frizz control, leaving the hair surface completely smooth.

How does the new BC Bonacure Repair Rescue Sealed Ends+ Arginine work?

This product is a must-have for your haircare routine and is easy to apply. It can be used wet or dry. It's an intensive cream-like serum for hair ends that seals and prevents splitting. It seals up to 90 per cent of split ends and brings back inner hair strength and elasticity. It nourishes those porous ends and helps to prevent further breakage. It also provides up to 210 degrees of heat protection when using hot tools.

Shea butter is packed with plant-based amino acids, namely soy and wheat protein, as well as Shea butter, this combination helps restore hair to its former glory. And boosts strength and elasticity, which is ideal if you are growing your hair.

To use: Consider this your leave-in conditioner; simply apply evenly to towel-dried hair and then style it as usual.

Best hair tips for summer?

My dream formula for looking after your locks during summer is the Schwarzkopf Professional BC Repair Rescue range. Incorporate deep conditioning treatments in your weekly routine, always wear a hat outside, and don’t forget to have regular trims to keep your hair looking its best.
