Avène Cicalfate + Restorative Protective Cream

My skin has a hard life, constantly trialling new products and treatments, not to mention our schizophrenic spring weather right now, from blustery windy days to humid and overcast. My skin has been next-level dry, to the point my lips have cracked. Last week, this miracle moisturiser landed on my desk, almost a gift from the skin gods. It has saved my parched complexion, here's why, says editor Trudi Brewer.

What is it?

A fragrance-free skin healer with dozens of beauty awards to its name. Created to calm and correct dry, itchy, cracked skin associated with eczema or skin sensitivities, including nappy rash, within 48 hours. The brand calls it 'a multipurpose cream for the whole family's skin irritation needs.'

Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream, is available in 100ml, $28, and 40ml, $18.

What's in it?

The main ingredient is a soothing postbiotic that comes from Avène's mineral-rich, natural Thermal Spring Water. Once blended with beeswax, hydrating glycerin, amino acids, and hydrogenated vegetable oil, it becomes a richly hydrating cream. The anti-bacterial agents, including copper and zinc sulfates, help heal inflammation and prevent germs from settling on compromised skin. At the same time, magnesium sulfate draws water to the dehydrated skin to hydrate and limit sensitivities. It's also alcohol, paraben and fragrance-free.

Why do I like it?

As someone with dehydrated and often sensitive skin, I always look for hydrating creams that don't cause my skin any irritation and soothe it quickly. Few products are as universally necessary to a skincare routine as this rich skin healer. I believe every beauty routine needs an SOS cream like this; on those days when your skin still feels dry and sore regardless of what you slather on it, it will slip into any regime. While it is a rich, creamy consistency ( a little like sunscreen), it takes seconds to work into the skin, and once absorbed, it leaves skin suitably plush and plump-looking, as well as feeling smooth to the touch. But it's how it feels that has made this cream famous - it's a hard-working treat for my thirsty skin.
