What to wear to work this autumn

What to wear to the office is so flexi these days, and about time. From rushing to work after the school run, or heading offshore to a work conference you need a work wardrobe of everyday pieces that are both functional and fashionable. Style director Louise Hilsz shares what's in store now.

The best thing about a ready-to-wear work wardrobe is how much time it saves you getting ready in the morning. Here's some fashion inspiration this season.

THE DRESS

A stylish dress always solves that nothing-to-wear moment in the morning. Autumn styles are so flattering for all figures shapes, and when it comes to shades think muted tones of khaki, navy, rust, beige and blush. Our favourite way to style a dress is with an ankle boot, and this season it's western all the way.

Verge Serene dress, $380. Mi Piaci Adelia Western boot, $360. Saben Gita 2.0 bag, $589. Zoe & Morgan Pocket Full of Sunshine earrings, $299.

THE BLAZER

A tailored blazer will transform the most casual of looks for work. This season's styles have statement shoulders in a boxy, double-breasted shape. It is the perfect blazer for power dressing or when worn with a camisole and jeans for casual Friday.

Witchery Double Breast Check Blazer, $300. Liam Carol silk t-shirt, $229. Witchery Check pant, $170. Merchant 1948 Teddy mule, $230.

CASUAL FRIDAY

From those trusty skinnies to the hot-right-now wide-leg jeans, or a cute fitted jacket - denim never fails to deliver for that dressed down look for casual Friday. With a brilliant selection of new styles on offer this season, all you need to update your casual work wardrobe is right here.

Helen Cherry Crew neck cashmere, $339. Moochi Envision skirt, $250. Trelise Cooper The Very Last Pearl jacket, $799. Kathryn Wilson Samara trainer, $320.
