Why do we need supplements if we have a balanced diet?
Over 90 percent of us do not reach the recommended intake of vegetables each day. Veggies are where we gain our most abundant vitamins, minerals, and co-factors. Add to this; mass farming methods that affect the nutrient quality of our food, our busy lives, and stress, and we need more nutrients to rebalance.
What are the best supplements to take for women 30 plus?
All women are different, but these are our busy years and often involve balancing family and work commitments. A good quality multivitamin with potent levels of B vitamins will help with energy and focus. Natural antioxidants and minerals like silica are essential for hair, skin and nail health, and I’d recommend considering a good quality magnesium supplement especially if your life is stressful or you don't sleep well.
Should you take supplements with or without food?
It depends on the nutrient or herb that you are taking, so best that you follow the directions on the label. However, B vitamins and zinc are good examples of where you need to take these supplements with food.
Are there specific supplements that you should take to stay well during winter?
Yes. A probiotic over winter is essential, as 70 percent of a healthy immune system comes from a healthy bacteria balance in our gut. Vitamin D is necessary especially in winter, and the incidence of vitamin D deficiency is increasing. Proper vitamin D levels are essential for a well-functioning immune system.
Can you do anything with your diet to boost the effectiveness of supplements?
Definitely. Eat more fruit and veggies. Nutrients work together; there are hundreds we need in trace amounts that help others work better. Eat as many brightly coloured fruit and veggies in red, orange and green; these are the most nutrient-dense varieties.
You offer liquid and tablet supplements can you take both at the same time and will this boost the effectiveness?
It depends on the ingredients.
