Bvlgari Splendida

It's a thing right now, luxury fashion brands showcasing a collection of exquisite scents. From Les Exclusifs de Chanel to Les Parfums Louis Vuitton, and now Bulgari Splendida. Four fragrances inspired by the very essence of what makes scent unforgettable - iconic flowers. Trudi Brewer shares the story of a perfume legacy.

You would not be alone if you loved a single floral scent. Traditional and feminine, these fragrances are unique because the perfume of one particular flower dominates. French perfumers call this fragrance category soliflore, and today they are enjoying a revival. Bulgari's latest collection Splendida have taken the character of four iconic flowers - rose, iris, jasmine and magnolia and bottled them in a flacon crowned with a jewel-like stopper. The result a reflection of the luxury jewellery house where these scents were created. Here's the collection.

Bvlgari Splendida Rose Rose, Eau de Parfum, 50ml, $172.

There are very few scents that are not without a splash of rose in the formulation, but it's the quality of that splash that defines the longevity of perfume. Four tons, which equates to 1.6 million rose blossoms, once cold pressed make one kilo of rose oil. Hence it is expensive. And in this bottle there is only the best, that is Damask rose oil. Capturing the sweet, delicate Damask rose to reveal the most exquisite, powdery aroma. Then once this rose is blended with the mandarin and white mulberry and a smattering of woody patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver and musk, this pretty scent becomes very warm and very sexy indeed.

Bvlgari Splendida Jasmin Noir Eau de Parfum, 50ml, $172.

Another famous flower used in fragrance making is small but potent. Jasmine absolute is the dominant note in this fragrance, and this concoction uses both feminine and masculine notes. The heady orange blossom and delicate lotus flower are blended uniquely, by being wrapped in warm, delicious woody notes such as almond and liquorice oil. With the night-blooming jasmine sambac, woody notes and then the mix of crisp green gardenia - a warm, powdery Oriental fragrance is born. Perhaps the most elegant of all four Splendida scents and most certainly the the most addictive.

Bvlgari Splendida Iris D'Or, 50ml, Eau de Parfum $172.

Woody, musky and floral (our editor's favourite Splendida offering, she is a big iris fan). This fragrance is laden with fresh, green spring blooms such as iris, violet and the delicate, but rare mimosa. It is what experts would call a woody floral scent; it's the ideal scent for summer thanks to the green note of citrusy bergamot. And what makes it linger? A blend of some full-bodied woody base notes such as orris, vetiver sandalwood and milky tonka bean. It is a chic, sophisticated perfume with a playful edge. The creaminess almost skin-like aroma is unforgettable.

Bvlgari Spendida Magnolia Sensuel Eau de Parfum, 50ml, $172.

Created from one flower that has a reputation for the shortest life - the magnolia. These magnificent, yet mysterious enormous white flowers with stiff, dark green suede-like leaves are known more for their beauty than their scent. But when you get close the honey, lemony aroma from the Chinese magnolia used in this perfume is truly divine. And once blended with heady jasmine, juicy orange blossom, and the creamy qualities of Tahitian vanilla, patchouli and musk, it takes on an elegant aroma that is fit for the ruby red jewel-like bottle that this fragrance is housed in (on counter Feb 10th).
