They are essential for helping lipstick stay-the-day. But as beauty director Sarah Simpson discovers not all lip liners are created equal - here's her top ten.
From long lasting to super hydrating, here are the game-changing liners in all our favourtie shades.
Elizabeth Arden Precision Glide Lip Liner in fuschia, $41.
Smooth and true to colour, thanks to the vitamin enriched formula, this liner is perfect for anyone who likes to wear a bright pink pout.
Bobbi Brown Lip Pencil in pale pink, $54.
For anyone who battles with their lipstick feathering, the velvet-like finish you get from this liner is the ideal base to any soft pink lip gloss - and the sharpener provided keeps this pencil 'en pointe'.
Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lip Pencil in Tawny $54.
Known for it's brilliant ability to last for hours, we like the clever lip brush on the end of this pencil. With seven shades there is also clear, which works like an invisible shield around the lip line to prevent colour travelling.
Revlon ColorStay Lipliner in Blush, $29.
This is the number one selling lip liner in New Zealand, and we can tell you why. It's creamy, long lasting, and the range of beige-based colours blend with any skin tone. There are six shades the other must have colour is Nude.
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Big Bang, $36.
Primed with vitamin E, jojoba and cottonseed oils our editor swears by this liner along with the 17 shades in the range. Her trick: wear it as lipstick, with a slick of hydrating balm over the top.
Stila Stay All Day Lip Liner in Merlot, $31.
Brilliant colour pay off, it's also brimming with antioxidants, ideal over sunscreen when skiing this winter. There are seven shades, Merlot is the most vibrant.
Shiseido Smoothing Lip Pencil in Mahogany, $41.
We use this colour almost everyday with or without lipstick, the handy brush on the end of the pencil makes it ideal for travel. There are 10 shades from coral to soft pink.
Lancome Lip Liner in 378, $50 hits counters 19th June.
We got our hands on this liner before it hit beauty counters, vibrant and creamy, it's going to be a keeper when we wear bright lipstick shades.
Osmosis Lip Pencil in Delicate Rose, $38.
Vegan, gluten-free and oncology friendly, this is the safest liner you will place on your lips. While it's all natural, it still offers brilliant colour pay off, and comes in three on-trend shades - we can't decide the shade we love more Nude, Sangria or Delicate Rose.
MAC Cosmetics Lip Liner, $30. With the most extensive range of shades (so many we have lost count) this liner is one of MAC's top selling products. Created to shape and contour lips, it can be worn alone or under lipstick and gloss - our favourite colour for winter is Half Red.
