Matte
The most on-trend finish is matte. It needs the least amount of maintenance, however you need to make sure skin is well hydrated to avoid the colour looking patchy or bleeding into fine lines.

Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer in Poppy Pop, $47. Revlon Ultra HD Lipcolor in Love, $29. Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Raven, $43.

Gloss
A wet-look glossy red lip needs constant attention, which is why I choose a lacquer-like finish, with good colour payoff and low sheen.

Tom Ford Patent Finish Lip Color in Red-Corset, $86. YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis A Leveres Vinyl Cream Lip Stain in Rhythm Red, $69. Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Bold Liquid Lipstick in Firey Red, $40.

Cream
The most comfortable finish to wear is cream lipstick. These can be layered to give an intense colour pay-off or blotted back to reveal a barely-there stain.

Shiseido Rouge Rouge Lipstick in RD305, $55. Guerlain KissKiss Roselip in Crazy Bouquet, $60.
Burt's Bees Lipstick in Scarlet Soaked, $22.

Top tips: Finding a flattering shade is the first hurdle when wearing red lipstick. Choose a red with blue undertones if you have pale skin, these hues also make teeth appear whiter.
Berry-reds work best for those with pink undertones, and olive skin tones should stick with orangey reds.
If you're at the beauty counter and unsure of your shade choice, pick the colour that is only two shades darker than the colour of your lips.

If the shade is too bright once applied, blend the red lipstick with a nude-coloured lip liner to knock back the intensity.
