If summer ever arrives here in New Zealand be prepared for a beauty switch. It's time to invest in a sheer, yet luminous foundation, UV protecting hair care, a bold lip balm and a citrusy scent. Editor Trudi Brewer shares the latest and her favourite beauty buys.
Switch out your foundation
Heat and humidity are unforgiving on the skin, and sporting a heavy foundation can cause the skin to sweat, which block pores. Swap your winter foundation for something sheer in coverage and lightweight on the skin. Those with a built-in SPF is ideal.
NEW: Clinique Even Better Glow Light Reflecting Makeup, $65. The built-in SPF and vitamin C, along with the sheer to medium coverage gives skin a luminous even-looking glow.
FAVOURITE: Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15, $98.00 A weightless coverage with an SPF, this makeup looks like you're not wearing a base, yet it covers an uneven complexion - it's genius.
Switch from powders to creams
Powders may keep skin looking matte, dusting on layer after layer of powder accentuates fine lines. Cream formulas are better for skin when the heat is on, this includes bronzers, highlighters, and blush, they are kinder on the skin in the heat and give your complexion a flattering luminous glow.
NEW: Estèe Lauder Doublewear Radiant Bronze Cushion Stick, $69. A creamy bronzer and applicator all-in-one. Expect a sheer coverage that lasts for hours.
FAVOURITE: Nude By Nature Touch of Glow Highlighter Stick, $30 Three iridescent shades create a hint of colour anywhere you want shimmer - this creamy, natural formula blend seamlessly with your fingers.
Switch to a bold lip
Summer is the season to embrace colour. Prime your skin with self-tan, wear minimal eye makeup and go for a bold lip. We favour tinted balms and lip glosses in summer. Go for a bold hydrating formula in shades of pink. If you’re the outdoorsy type make sure the formula contains an SPF.
NEW: Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color in Punch, $58. Briilliant colour pay off with bold pigments that gives a blotted down stain-like effect on the lips. While the vitamins E and C and beeswax leave lip feeling like you're wearing a balm - there are 18 shades.
FAVOURTIE: Burt's Bees Lip Gloss Crayon in Pink Lagoon, $18. Easy to apply, this lip crayon tints lips with a 100 percent natural blend of jojoba and kendi (bamboo extract) oils, mixed with Shea Butter - it's a lip balm with a gorgeous sheen.
Switch up your exfoliation
Oil, sweat and sunscreen build up on the skins and clog pores leaving skin looking dull. Exfoliating helps keep skin smooth, however don't scrub in the morning, only exfoliate at night. Scrubbing off a layer of skin in the morning makes skin more sensitive and more susceptible to sun damage during the day. Exfoliating pads are brilliant for the face, and a sugar, oil combination scrub is perfect for the body.
NEW: Pure Fiji Coconut Lime Blossom Sugar Rub, $67. Natural sugar cane with heavenly scented lime blossom, suspended in cold pressed virgin coconut oil - everything about this scrub is divine.
FAVOURITE: Elizabeth Arden Skin Illuminating Retexturizing Pads, $84. Rich with nourishing essential oils, amino acids and five percent glycolic acid, these cleansing treatment pads keep your skin looking blemish free and feeling super smooth.
Switch to a citrus scent
Shelve those heady oriental floral fragrances ideal for creating warmth in winter, and arm yourself with something fresh, sexy and citrusy. Think sunshine in a flower and fruit-filled garden.
NEW: Tiffany & Co EDP, 50ml, $179. Fresh with delicate iris flower, crisp, thanks to mandarin blossom yet long-lasting curtesy of the delicate musky patchouli - it's heavenly.
FAVOURITE: Jo Malone London French Lime Blossom Cologne, 100ml, $232. Editor Trudi Brewer's wedding day fragrance it's a summer staple A spicy citrus thanks to linden flowers, bergamot and tarragon.
Switch to UV protecting hair care
With or without hair colour, your locks need protection from the sun's punishing rays. Switch up to a UV protecting shampoo and conditioner, (conditioner is the most important because it leaves a protective shield on the hair). These contain UV-absorbing filters and proteins that prevent your expensive colour fading and hair becoming dry and frizzy.
NEW: KMS COLORVITALITY Conditioner, $33. The UV-filter helps maintain the radiant-look of your colour, while an AHA (alpha-hydroxy-acid) and lactic acid complex supports the internal health and strength of hair, preventing dryness.
FAVOURITE: Fudge Colour Lock Conditioner, $24. Sulphate free, this conditioner nourishes instantly, and the sunflower and sweet blue lupin extracts protect colour fading while you're out in the sun.
