How to: get beachy waves this summer

This gorgeous look is the embodiment of summer - a raw, untamed mane of texture and tousled waves gives your locks a look as if you've been frolicking in the ocean all day. Sarah Simpson is dedicating this post in honour of this sexy, summery and stylish look.

While some of the lucky ones out there may be able to achieve this look with a simple dip in the drink, most of us need products to add texture, grit and movement. Here's some expert advice from some of New Zealand's top stylists on how to fake your way to beachy locks over summer.

Emma Sheen from Stephen Marr, Auckland.
Use these types of products whilst blow-drying for texture and adding volume. They can also be used to finish hair, giving it some grit and hold to create an 'undone' look.

Jasmine Tholman from ASC Salon, Auckland.
Firstly blast the hair with your hair dryer to get lots of body in the roots, ensuring the hair cuticle is in the right direction to avoid frizz. Once roots are dry and ends are about 80 percent dry, tip  your head upside down and spray product throughout, flip head back up, scrunch and spray a little more.

Hazel Newman from Three Hairdressing, Whangarei.
Products like these below are perfect coming into the summer months when the warmer weather can make hair wilt in the heat. Spray through the mid-lengths and ends for a textured tousled feel, ideal for wavy textured bob looks. Or, apply to the root area (like a dry shampoo) by lifting up sections of the hair and spritzing underneath to create volume and to ensure your style stays put.
